The Ben Winkelman Trio is an award-winning contemporary jazz piano
trio whose repertoire consists entirely of original compositions, some
of which are modern reinterpretations of stride and early jazz; others
are based on Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms; some incorporate elements
of Argentinean tango and contemporary classical music.
The result is a dynamic and exciting meeting between the traditional and
the innovative, and a balance between the structure of arrangements and
the freedom of improvisation. These elements come together to form a
sound that is unique in Australian jazz.
The trio has released two albums on the Jazzhead label to critical
acclaim (Stomps, Pieces & Variations 2005, nominated for a Bell award,
and The Spanish Tinge 2007, winner of the 2007 AIR award for Best Jazz
Release), and toured every part of Australia in 2006 and 2007.
In 2006
the trio appeared on ABC TV’s Sunday Arts program and played at some of
the major national jazz festivals. In 2008 the trio has more national
touring planned, and will be making its first appearing in Japan at the
Kutchan Jazz Festival.
****** “Just when we thought everything possible with jazz piano trios
had been done, this Melbourne trio's debut album forces a rethink.” –

***** *“Splendid.
Winkelman’s 14 joyous originals embody the
exhilaration of music making and not a hint of fat… here we come a
little closer to the divine.” – *The Age EG*
**** "Here, the Melbourne pianist cooks up a bouillabaisse of flavours
including stride, tango, Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms. The presentation
is tightly drilled but the music zings with an electricity of
counterpoint and ideas popping up everywhere. More please.” - *The Age
Green Guide*
“Ben Winkelman is the genuine article, a determined cross-breeder of
styles whose music is inventive and often surprising. It’s hard not to
enjoy the panache and sense of fun: Winkelman’s tunes keep you guessing,
and the trio negotiates their hairpin musical turns with ease and
vivacity. In the era of the post-modern piano trio, Winkelman’s already
claimed his place at the table.”* - Cadence (USA)*

Our deserts, harsh but beautiful, with many evocative moods.
Inspired by soft early morning light, strident mid-day sun and the
soul lifting evenings, Joan evolved her latest dramatic series.
Joan has captured the spiritual essence of her recent desert
travels, using the actual desert ochres to provide the special
depth and feeling found in these works.
